No city lots: why garages matter in Williamsburg

Williamsburg has no city-run parking lots, so off-street parking here means a private garage. NYC DOT’s Brooklyn lots are all in neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Brighton Beach, Canarsie, Gowanus, and Sheepshead Bay.

That matters for two reasons. There is no cheap city lot to fall back on, like the $1.50-an-hour lot in Flushing. And city lots don’t allow overnight parking anyway, so for anyone who keeps a car in Williamsburg, the realistic options are the street or a monthly garage spot.

Ticket risk

Street parking is competitive. An analysis of city ticket data ranked Williamsburg among Brooklyn‘s riskier neighborhoods for tickets, at about 8.4 tickets per 100 parking spaces (2021 data).

Williamsburg garages, one by one

Street parking in Williamsburg

Street parking in Williamsburg works for short visits, but street cleaning is where most drivers get caught. Read the full sign on every block, including its hours and days.

  • Meters: a metered block on Bedford Avenue charges $2 for the first hour and $5 for two, Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a 2-hour limit. Each meter shows its own rate.
  • Sundays and holidays: meters are not in effect on Sundays or major legal holidays. Other posted rules still apply.
  • Daily street cleaning on commercial blocks: some Bedford Avenue blocks have a short no-parking window every morning, such as 7:30 to 8 a.m., Monday to Saturday. Residential blocks usually have longer windows once or twice a week.
  • Check today’s status: see whether alternate side parking is in effect today before you leave a car.
  • Outdoor dining: some metered spaces on restaurant blocks are taken by dining setups.
  • Hydrants: keep 15 feet clear on each side. See our fire hydrant ticket guide.

Changed in 2023

The Southside switch to daytime street cleaning

Parts of the Southside moved from overnight to daytime street cleaning after years of local advocacy, with enforcement starting January 2, 2023. The change covers:

  • Broadway, between Driggs and Flushing Avenues
  • Kent Avenue, between S 10th St and Flushing Avenue
  • Wallabout Street, between Classon and Franklin Avenues
  • Flushing Avenue, between Classon Avenue and Broadway

If you learned these blocks under the old overnight rules, read the current signs.

Ticket trap

Don’t park in the Kent Avenue bike lane

Kent Avenue has a two-way protected bike lane along the waterfront, so much of its curb has no parking at all. Cars left in the lane risk a ticket or a tow, even if other cars are parked there.

Overnight parking, EV charging, and tall vehicles

Before leaving a car overnight, check when the garage hands cars back. A garage that closes at midnight keeps your car until morning.

EV charging

  • 325 Kent Avenue: charging costs $8.27 per use for daily parkers, or $78.07 a month added to a monthly plan.
  • City Parking, 82 N 13th St: lists EV charging. Ask about charger access when you book.

Tall and oversized vehicles

City Parking at 82 N 13th St has no height limit, which suits vans and tall SUVs. At 325 Kent Avenue, oversized vehicles and SUVs add $9.06 a day, and extra-large vehicles $13.59. Mention your vehicle when you ask for a quote.

Commuting to Manhattan: park in Williamsburg and ride in

Driving over the Williamsburg Bridge drops you on the Lower East Side, inside the congestion zone, so a weekday commute costs $9 in tolls before you pay to park. Parking in Williamsburg and taking the subway skips the toll.

Congestion toll (E-ZPass, peak hours)About $189 ($9 a day)$0

Williamsburg is one stop from Manhattan on two lines. The L runs from Bedford Avenue to 1st Avenue, and the J, M, and Z run from Marcy Avenue to Delancey and Essex Streets.
