Alternate Side Parking NYC: Is It Suspended Today? 2026 Calendar, Rules & Fines

Alternate side parking (ASP) is New York City’s street cleaning rule. When ASP is in effect, you can’t park on the side of the street being swept during the hours on the sign. The city suspends ASP on certain legal and religious holidays and during emergencies like snowstorms. This guide covers alternate side parking NYC rules for 2026: today’s status, the suspension calendar, fines, and how to fight a ticket.

Is Alternate Side Parking in Effect Today?

Check before you leave your car. Rules can change within hours during storms. The status box above shows planned holiday suspensions only. Always confirm with an official source.

How to Check Today’s (and Tomorrow’s) Status

Use these official city sources:

  • NYC311. The NYC311 website and 311 app both show whether ASP and meters are in effect today.
  • @NYCASP on X. The city’s automated account posts twice a day and for emergency suspensions. Each post also states whether meters are in effect. It doesn’t reply to messages.
  • Notify NYC. The city’s free alert service sends emergency notices by text, email, or app. Use it to catch sudden suspensions.
  • DOT email alerts. Sign up to get emails about unplanned suspensions.

Planning for tomorrow? Check the suspension calendar below first. Then check @NYCASP the night before and again in the morning. Snow suspensions are often announced at short notice.

What “Suspended” Means

A suspension turns off street cleaning rules for the whole day, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. You don’t need to move your car for the sweeper.

Other rules stay in force. Posted time limits and other signs still apply. On most suspension days, meters stay on too. The exceptions are Sundays and major legal holidays. Read the @NYCASP post to confirm the meter status for that day.

How to Read the Table

  • Sundays: These dates don't change your week, because ASP never applies on Sundays anyway.
  • Saturdays: A Saturday suspension helps you only if your block's sign lists Saturday hours.
  • Meters: Meters are off on Sundays and on major legal holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two left this year.
  • Major legal holidays: On these days, the city also suspends No Stopping, No Standing, and No Parking rules. Rules that normally apply seven days a week still apply. "No Standing Anytime" is one example.

Download the Calendar

Get the official 2026 ASP calendar (PDF). To add it to Google Calendar or Outlook, download the calendar file (.ics) from DOT's alternate side parking page. The PDF also lists earlier 2026 dates, such as Lunar New Year.

DOT also publishes the calendar in 15 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, Greek, Haitian Creole, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Yiddish.

How Alternate Side Parking NYC Rules Work

What Is ASP and Why Does NYC Have It?

ASP clears one side of the street at a time so the Department of Sanitation's (DSNY) mechanical brooms can reach the curb. Sweepers can't clean around parked cars. So the city posts cleaning windows, usually once or twice a week per side.

Several city agencies share the job:

AgencyRole
DSNY (Sanitation)Sweeps the streets and sets cleaning schedules
DOT (Transportation)Posts parking signs and publishes the suspension calendar
NYPD and DSNY enforcement agentsWrite ASP tickets
DOF (Finance)Collects fines and runs ticket hearings
NYC311Posts daily status and answers questions

Does Your Block Have ASP?

Not every block does. The posted sign is the only reliable answer.

Walk the whole block and read every sign on your side. Then check the other side, which often has different days. DOT's Parking Sign Locator maps signs block by block. It can miss new or temporary changes, so trust the sign on the pole.

How to Read an ASP Sign

Alternate side parking NYC sign with the broom symbol, cleaning hours, days, and arrow labeled
Illustration of a typical ASP sign. Real signs vary by block.

An ASP sign shows a "P" crossed by a broom. It lists the days and hours you can't park on that side.

Here is an example: "No Parking, 9:30–11 AM, Tues & Fri." You must clear that curb from 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday and Friday.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Windows often run 90 minutes or three hours. Times vary from block to block.
  • The arrow shows which stretch of the curb the sign covers.
  • A block can have several signs. Follow every sign that covers your spot.

When Can You Move Back?

Return only after the posted window ends. The rule lasts the whole time on the sign, even after the sweeper passes. Sweepers sometimes make a second pass. Set a phone alarm for the end time.

The 5-Minute Grace Period

NYC law gives drivers five minutes before an officer can write certain parking tickets. Admin Code §19-213 bars a ticket until five minutes after a violation occurs. An ASP violation starts when the cleaning window starts. So if your window starts at 9:30 a.m., you can't get a ticket before 9:35 a.m.

The City Council passed the law in 2009 over Mayor Bloomberg's veto. Supporters called the old tickets "gotcha" tickets.

Treat the grace period as a cushion, not a plan. Enforcement agents' watches may not match yours. Move your car before the window starts.

Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays

ASP never applies on Sundays. A Saturday counts only if your sign lists it. Holiday suspensions can also fall on Saturdays. Check the calendar above.

Where to Put Your Car During Street Cleaning

Every ASP day, you need a legal spot for the length of the window. Here are your real options.

  • Move to the other side of the street. This works only if that side has no rule in effect at the same time. Read its sign first.
  • Use a metered spot. Pay the meter and follow its time limit. Check NYC meter rates by zone before you go.
  • Park in a garage or lot. Off-street parking isn't affected by ASP. Compare garage rates by neighborhood. In Queens, see our guides to parking in Flushing and Long Island City.
  • Drive around until the window ends. This works for short windows, but it costs time and gas.

Can You Sit in Your Car During ASP?

Many drivers wait in their cars until the sweeper passes. Guides disagree on whether this avoids a ticket.

Here is what the city says. DOT's parking sign guide says waiting isn't allowed at No Parking signs. NYC311 says double parking across the street is illegal, even with a driver inside. It says an occupied car creates the same hazard as an empty one.

We found no official statement on sitting in your car during ASP specifically. The safe choice is to move to a legal spot.

Double Parking Rules

DOT says double parking a passenger car is illegal at all times, including during street cleaning. It's a separate violation, code 46, with a $115 fine. See every other fine in our NYC parking ticket fines table.

Commercial vehicles have limited exceptions for quick pickups, deliveries, and service calls. Specific conditions apply. Check DOT's commercial vehicle rules before you rely on them.

Garage and Monthly Parking

If the weekly move wears you down, a garage spot ends it. Off-street spots aren't covered by ASP, snow suspensions, or sticker enforcement.

Done moving your car twice a week?

A monthly garage spot takes ASP, snow suspensions, and window stickers off your list. Compare prices by neighborhood or ZIP code.

ASP Tickets: Fines, Deadlines, and Disputes

How Much Is an ASP Ticket?

An ASP ticket costs $65 everywhere in NYC. The Department of Finance lists it as violation code 21, street cleaning. The $65 includes a $15 state surcharge.

Will Your Car Be Towed for ASP?

An ASP violation usually means a ticket, not a tow. DOT says any illegally parked car can be towed, though. Unpaid tickets raise the risk. Once your unpaid judgments reach $350, the city can boot or tow your car. Our NYC towing and booting guide covers the fees and how to get your car back.

What Happens After You Get a Ticket

WhenWhat happens
Days 1–30Pay or request a hearing. Either step avoids late penalties.
After day 30You can still request a hearing. If you're found guilty, late penalties are added.
About day 100If you haven't paid or requested a hearing, the ticket goes into judgment.
After judgmentThe city can send the debt to collections or seize assets.
Over $350 in judgmentsThe city can boot or tow your car.

A judgment covers the full fine plus penalties and interest. Six $65 tickets already top $350. Penalties can get you there sooner.

Only DOF can pause your deadline. Contacting any other office won't stop the clock.

How to Look Up or Pay a Ticket

Look up your ticket by plate or ticket number on the city's parking tickets page. You can pay online, by mail, in person at a DOF business center, or in the NYC Pay or Dispute app.

How to Dispute an ASP Ticket

  1. Request a hearing within 30 days. Apply online, by mail, in the Pay or Dispute app, or in person. Online hearings get the judge's decision by email.
  2. Gather photos. Photograph the whole side of the street, both sides of every sign, the street sign, and the building address. Use date- and time-stamped photos, and label each one.
  3. Add a sworn statement. DOF says a signed statement carries more weight.
  4. Send copies, not originals.

Common grounds for a dismissal include:

  • The ticket was issued on a suspension day. Submit the official calendar or a screenshot of the @NYCASP post for that date.
  • A sign was missing, blocked, or unreadable. Photos of the sign are your proof.
  • The ticket was written inside the grace period. Compare the time on the ticket with the start time on the sign.
  • The ticket has errors. Check the plate, state, and vehicle details.

Special Cases

Disability Parking Permits

The NYC Parking Permit for People with Disabilities (NYC PPPD) is a dashboard placard. DOT says it lets you park at any No Parking space, including street cleaning spaces. It doesn't cover No Standing or No Stopping zones, spots within 15 feet of a hydrant, or double parking. Park too close to one and you'll get a $115 fire hydrant ticket, even on a day when ASP is suspended.

The New York State hangtag (NYS PPPD) doesn't exempt you from ASP. In NYC, it works only in off-street spaces for people with disabilities.

If you got a ticket while displaying your NYC PPPD, write your permit number on the summons. Mail it with a copy of your permit to DOF's Parking Violation Advocacy Unit.

Visitors and Rental Cars

ASP applies to every car on the street, including rentals and out-of-state plates. A ticket on a rental goes to the rental company first. DOF's Rental Program lets the company transfer the ticket to you. Check your rental contract for extra fees.

Disability permits from other states or countries work only in off-street accessible spaces in NYC. U.S. residents can apply for an NYC PPPD. Rental plates can't go on that permit.

Open Streets

ASP also applies on Open Streets. When it's in effect, cars should leave and may return after the window ends. If barriers are up, move them to drive through. Stay at 5 mph and watch for pedestrians.

Snow Suspensions

The city suspends ASP when snow blocks the sweepers. There's no set length. The city announces snow suspensions in steps, so check @NYCASP every day.

A snow suspension only turns off street cleaning. Other parking rules still apply. In major storms, the mayor can also issue emergency orders that limit driving or parking. Sign up for Notify NYC to get them.

What's New for ASP in 2026

Neon Green Stickers Are Back

DSNY started putting neon green stickers on cars that block sweepers in early August. The first ones went on West 90th Street, between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West.

A 2026 law led by Council Member Gale Brewer lets DSNY and DOT place stickers up to 8.5 by 11 inches on car windows. The city had banned stickers in 2012 after complaints that they damaged windows. The new stickers are designed to peel off more easily. You can still get the $65 ticket as well.

DSNY says about 500,000 cars aren't moved during ASP each week. That keeps sweepers off more than 3,000 miles of streets.

Prospect Heights Tests Once-a-Week ASP

From August 3 to September 25, DSNY tested once-a-week ASP on 12 Prospect Heights streets in Brooklyn. Drivers were ticketed only on their pilot day, Thursday or Friday, depending on their side of the street. The signs didn't change, so they still showed the old twice-a-week schedule.

Got a ticket on a non-pilot day during the test? Council Member Crystal Hudson's office asked drivers to email [email protected] with their name, plate, and ticket number.

Hudson's office says a successful pilot could become permanent. DSNY hasn't shared results yet. We'll update this section when it does.

Winter 2026: A Month-Long Snow Break

A late-January winter storm led the city to suspend ASP for snow operations. The city extended the pause in short steps, and ASP stayed off for close to a month. It returned in mid-February. The city suspended ASP for snow again on February 23.

Proposals to Watch

In 2023, Council Member Lincoln Restler proposed higher fines for repeat ASP violations. The first ticket would stay at $65. Later tickets within 12 months would cost $100. Cars with three violations in a year could be towed. We found no record of the bill passing.

Official ASP Tools vs Apps

For status and rules, trust city sources first. Use private apps for extras like reminders.

Tips to Avoid ASP Tickets

  • Set two reminders. Use a phone alarm for your window's start time. Turn on NYC311 app notifications for schedule changes.
  • Read the sign where you're moving to. Each side of the street can have different days and hours.
  • Photograph your spot. Take time-stamped photos of the sign and your car. They help if you dispute a ticket.
  • Load the calendar once. Add DOT's .ics file to your phone. Follow @NYCASP for snow days.
  • Park for the later cleaning day. Early in the week, some drivers pick the side of the street cleaned later in the week. That buys extra days before the next move. Drivers also park before holiday suspensions to skip a cleaning day. Always follow the posted sign.

Want to Change the ASP Sign on Your Block?

Contact your community board. You can ask for a new sign, a schedule change, or street cleaning on a new block. The board holds a public hearing and votes on a recommendation to DSNY. Find your board by address in the NYC311 community board directory.

ASP Tickets vs Monthly Parking: Which Costs Less?

Moving your car costs time. A ticket costs money. A garage costs more money. Here's how to compare them.

The Ticket Math

One $65 ticket a week adds up to $3,380 a year, or about $280 a month. Two tickets a month cost $130.

The Garage Math

Garages aren't cheap either. On the first day of the sticker program, one driver told FOX 5 the $65 ticket was still cheaper than a garage. Council Member Lincoln Restler has said off-street parking can cost about $600 a month in parts of his Brooklyn district. At that price, a garage equals about nine tickets a month.

If you rarely get a ticket, paying the occasional fine may cost less. If you get one every week, a garage may come out close to even.

What the Fine Doesn't Count

The fine isn't the whole cost. You also lose time moving your car and circling for a spot. Unpaid tickets can lead to a boot or tow. Now you may also get a sticker on your window.

Run Your Own Numbers

This leaves out your time, double-parking fines, and tow risk. Those costs can push the total higher.

Use a real quote from a garage, not a guess.
